HIDES & SKINS

At TASMAN, we believe when an animal gives their life to nourish and feed mankind; it is our job to ensure that the skin does not go to waste.

In 1947, we began processing these skins in a saltwater (brine) solution. This solution is used in order to preserve the quality of the skin and prevent it from decay. Once we process the skins in the brine solution, the excess fat is mechanically removed from the skin, leaving the hair on one side and the skin clean and smooth on the other side.

The image below shows the whole skin as it would be received at an Tasman Hide processing facility. The shaded parts of the image would be trimmed off after being brine cured and fleshed.
